behind the scenes

On a rainy morning in 1985 - 14 October, to be exact - a few young, fellow aviation enthousiasts set up ‘Starfighter Association’, as a way to lift a hobby to a higher stage. Contacts by STAS with several air forces were established, and soon we visited some southern European air arms. The resulting Kodachrome slide images found their way to several aviation magazines.

From then on, we started to travel to air bases around the world, and as ‘STAS Aviation Press’, we were now completing our own articles, rather than just illustrating other’s. Meanwhile, our focus had shifted to air-to-air photography. Over the years, we have joined numerous flights, ranging from fast jets to helicopters, over countries worldwide, from Norway to New Zealand.

Recently, the organization was renamed into aviationreview.online, as this better covers today’s activities. It is basically run by one of the original founding members. My name is Emiel Sloot, living in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, married and having two adult kids. Time flies - literally, as aviation has always been a big passion. Beside aviation photography, I work as airline captain with KLM. Logged over 16,000 flying hours in 30+ years, and do single-engine flying in my spare time.
