In July 2024, we joined an air-to-air photo flight to picture this German Navy Super Lynx Mk 88A. It featured a marvellous paint scheme applied for the NATO Tiger Meet 2004, that was held at Schleswig-Jagel Air Base one month earlier.
In 1981, West Germany bought nineteen Westland Lynx Mk 88, locally referred to as Sea Lynx. The one pictured here first flew on 18 June 1981 (with construction number 223) and was delivered to Marinefliegergeschwader 3 at Nordholz on 27 April 1983. In 1996, seven additional Super Lynx Mk 88As were acquired, while two years later it was decided to convert the seventeen remaining Mk 88s to the same standard. However, only fifteen were eventually rebuilt, since two were written off following accidents in 1999 and 2000 prior conversion.
Pictured in its attractive colour scheme, Mk 88A 83+02 was one of the rebuilt airframes, now assigned c/n 422. Operating with Marinefliegergeschwader 5 at Nordholz since November 2012, it was seen over the Heligoland Bight and the Island of Neuwerk during the photo session. More details on the German Sea Lynx can be found in the archives below in the reviews section, while a Marineflieger article will be prepared at a later stage.
